American cockroaches, often referred to as “water bugs” or “palmetto bugs,” are one of the largest and most daunting pests that can invade your home or business. These reddish-brown roaches are known for their size and speed, and they typically thrive in warm, damp environments such as basements, sewers, and drains. American cockroaches can contaminate food, spread bacteria and pathogens, and exacerbate allergies and asthma. Their presence is not only alarming due to their size, 1 3/8 – 2 1/8″, but are also indicative of potential hygiene and structural issues within the property, making prompt and effective intervention essential. They can enter structures by being brought in or even through mass migration from neighboring structures and dumpsites. Although they can feed on many different kinds a food, they tend to show fondness for rotting and fermenting foods.
German cockroaches are among the most persistent and troublesome pests that can invade homes and businesses. Known for their rapid reproduction and resilience, these small 1/2-5/8″, light-brown cockroaches can quickly turn a minor problem into a full-blown infestation. They are commonly found in kitchens and bathrooms, where they have easy access to food, water, and warmth. German cockroaches are notorious for contaminating food, spreading bacteria, and triggering allergies and asthma, particularly in children and sensitive individuals. Their presence in your home or business not only poses health risks but also creates an unsanitary and uncomfortable environment. German cockroaches can easily be identified by the two dark
parallel stripes on the pronotum. Females produce, on average, 5 oothecae with in their life span will carry the ootheca until it’s within 1-2 days of hatching. Each ootheca will produce between 30-40. Developmental time, egg to adult, can vary from 54-215 days, but usually only takes 50-60 days, making early intervention a pivotal point in elimination. German cockroaches are most commonly introduced into homes through paper products or packaging such as cardboard boxes and drink cartons, and via secondhand appliances like microwaves, TVs, refrigerators, or gaming systems. They will feed on anything of nutritional value as well as soaps, glue, and/or toothpaste.
Brown-banded cockroaches are a notorious pest known for their distinctive appearance and challenging behavior. These small, brown cockroaches are characterized by their light yellow bands across their wings and abdomen. Unlike their more common relatives, brown-banded cockroaches prefer drier, warmer environments and are often found in high places like cabinets, light fixtures, and behind appliances. Their ability to thrive in less humid areas makes them particularly tricky to detect and control, posing a threat to both residential and commercial spaces. Male and Females alike are about a 1/2″ long. Females are darker than their male counterparts and her abdomen is much broader. Though they both have wings, females can’t fly and males readily do. Nymphs can be identified by the two pale/white lateral bands that wrap the meso- and metathorax and a brown to black abdomen with pale center.
Smokybrown cockroaches are a major pest that can invade both residential and commercial properties, bringing significant discomfort and potential health risks. These roaches get their name from their shiny, dark brown to black color and are typically found in warm, humid environments. Unlike other cockroach species, Smokybrown cockroaches are excellent fliers, making them even more challenging to control. It’s common to find them in attics, crawl spaces, and around exterior areas of buildings, such as gutters and roof valleys that are over filled with organic debris. These pests are notorious for contaminating food, spreading bacteria, and exacerbating allergies, posing a serious threat to the cleanliness and safety of your living or working environment. These roaches range in size from 1-1 1/2″ long. Their
nymphal instars can be identified by the black to very dark brown color and the two white lateral sections on the abdomen. Females will deposit an ootheca 1 day after it is formed by firmly attaching it to a surface or object. Full developmental time varies and is greatly influenced by temperature. Organic matter makes up the majority of their food intake, outdoors, but inside they will fest on anything of nutritional value.
