Carpet beetles are tiny, ranging in sizes between 1/16″ – 1/4″ but they can be a significant nuisance in both homes and businesses. These insects, belonging to the family Dermestidae, are known for their destructive larvae that feed on a wide range of organic materials. While adult carpet beetles are often seen feeding on pollen and nectar outdoors, their larvae can wreak havoc indoors, particularly in areas where natural fibers like wool, silk, and leather are stored. The larvae are notorious for damaging carpets, upholstery, clothing, and other items made from animal-based materials, making them a common and unwelcome pest in households.

The lifecycle of a carpet beetle typically includes several stages, with the larval stage being the most damaging. The larvae are small, 3/16″- 5/16″, hairy, and can range in color from light brown to dark, with bristles that help them navigate through fibers. They thrive in dark, undisturbed areas where they can feed on organic matter, including dead insects, pet hair, and even food crumbs. As they feed, they can create small, irregular holes in fabrics, which are often the first sign of an infestation. Over time, the damage can become extensive, leading to the need for costly repairs or replacements.
